CHS sends 21 athletes into state qualifier

CAMDEN JUNIOR DARRION ALLEN qualified for Saturday’s AAA state qualifier in Spartanburg in both the discus and the shot put.

Camden finished second in last Wednesday’s Region 4-3A Track meet, which was held at the Camden High School Spring Sports Complex. The Bulldogs were fourth in the boys’ portion of the meet.

The Lady Bulldogs scored 111 points to finish second behind Indian Land, which won the event with 128 points. Fairfield Central (61), Columbia (23) and Chester (2) rounded out the scoring.  Along with their second place finish, the Lady Bulldogs also advanced 12 athletes to the AAA State Qualifier Meet this Saturday in Spartanburg

The following Lady Bulldogs will advance to the State Qualifier Meet in track events: Staci Sumpter (100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 4 x 100-meter relay and the 4 x 400-meter relay),  Deniah Arthur (400 meters, 4 x 100 relay and 4 x 400 relay), Carleigh Vaughn (4 x100 relay and the 4 x 400 relay),  McKenzie Taylor (4 x 800 relay), Heather Woolard (800 meters race and the 4 x 100 relay), Julia Keen (1,600 meters, 3,200 meters and 4 x 800 relay), Megan Goodrich (3,200 meters race and  4 x 800 relay),  Eleni Patoulas (4 x 800 relay),  Imani Wyatt (4 x 400 relay, 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles) and Katelyn Stevens in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles.  

In their field events, Heather Woolard will compete in both the long jump and the triple jump, Katelyn Stevens in the triple jump, Zy’Aja Cook in the high jump, and Kiana Doby in shot put and discus.

Along with advancing to the State Qualifier Meet, Wyatt, a freshman, won Region 4-3A titles in both the 100 hurdles and the 400 hurdles, setting two new Camden High School records with her times of 17.39 and 1:10, respectively. Senior Heather Woolard is conference champion in both the long jump and the triple jump, reaching a new personal best in the triple jump with a distance of 16-7.  Sophomore Staci Sumpter is the Region 4-3A champion in the 100-meter dash. 

Other Lady Bulldogs achieving either a season’s best or personal best at the Region IV-3A Meet include: Heather Woolard, Deniah Arthur, Staci Sumpter and Carleigh Vaughn in the 4 x 100 relay (52.37);  Deniah Arthur, Staci Sumpter, Imani Wyatt and Carleigh Vaughn in the 4 x 400 (4:27);  Julia Keen, Megan Goodrich, McKenzie Taylor and Eleni Patoulas in the 4 x 800 relay (12.11);  Imani Wyatt (17.39) and Katelyn Stevens (18.81) in the 100-meter hurdles; Imani Wyatt (1:10) and Katelyn Stevens (1:22) in the 400-meter hurdles;  Julia Keen (6:19) and Megan Goodrich (6:38) in the 1,600-meter race;  Megan Goodrich (14:21) in the 3,200 meter race;  Heather Woolard (2:39) in the 800-meter race;  Staci Sumpter (26.64) and Carleigh Vaughn (27.99) in the 200-meter race;  Kiana Doby (57-4), Caroline Best (52-1), and Mya Missouri (46-2) in discus;  Doby (23-2), Best (20-2) and Missouri (19-10) in shot put along with Heather Woolard (16-7) and Kaylie (12-11) Mason in the long jump.

The Camden boys scored 65 points in the 4-AAA meet trailing Chester (87), Indian Land (69), and Columbia (67), followed by Fairfield Central with 51 points.

The six Bulldog athletes that will advance to the State Qualifier Meet in track events are:  Shymeik Corbett (100-meter dash), Garrett Lawson and Sam Messinides (1,600 meters, 3,200 meters, and 4 x 800 relay), Pavlos Patoulas (1,600 meters and the 4 x 800 relay) and Caden Ralph (4 x 800 relay).

Competing in the field event in Spartaburg are Joseph Byrnes (pole vault),  Darrion Allen (shot put and discus) Nathan Gallman (shot put) and Zae’Qwan Norris in the high jump.

Along with advancing to the State Qualifier meet, senior Garrett Lawson is the Region 4-3A champion in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races, setting a new Camden High School record with his time in the 1,600 of 4:49.  Freshman Joseph Byrnes is the conference champion in pole vault while the 4 x 800-meter relay team of Garrett Lawson, Sam Messinides, Pavlos Patoulas, and Caden Ralph, also set a new CHS record with their relay time of 9:03.

Additional Bulldog athletes either achieving a season’s best or a personal best at the region meet were:  Sam Messinides (5:03) and Pavlos Patoulas (5:04) in the 1,600-meter race;  Zae’Qwan Norris (55.14) in the 400-meter race; Navdhit Bedi (1:13) in the 400-meter hurdles;  Shymeik Corbett (23.52) and Jalen Johnson (24.58) in the 200-meter race;  Garrett Lawson (11:04) in the 3200 meter race; Darrion Allen (38-6) in shot put; Jyheem Macklin (17-5) in the long jump and Joseph Byrnes (11-0) in the pole vault.
