Getting back on its regular schedule of meeting on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees will meet today at 6 p.m. The past several meetings have taken place on the second and fourth Tuesdays in order to deal with the search for a new superintendent and preliminary work on the Kershaw County School District’s (KCSD) proposed Fiscal Year 2019 budget.

Discussions on the proposed budget will continue tonight with -- at least according to an attachment to tonight’s proposed agenda -- little change from the last two budget presentations. It calls for an $87.1 million balanced budget, representing a 3.3 percent increase from the current fiscal year, and includes a 1 percent mandated increase in teacher salaries, 1.5 mandated step increase for teachers and the district’s proposal to add an additional 1 percent increase and 1.5 step increase for all other (non-teacher) employees. It also includes one additional secretarial position each at Camden and Lugoff-Elgin high schools, three additional special education teachers and one additional English Speakers of Other Languages teacher, an additional 5th Grade teacher for the Continuous Learning Center, and moving technician staff to the general fund.

District administrators hope to have trustees pass the budget early enough in May to allow for a smooth transition to the new budget year.

Also on tonight’s agenda:

• a presentation from Laurey Carpenter on Kershaw County being named a finalist in the All-America City competition;

• an update on referenda-related construction projects;

• a report from the joint board/Kershaw County Council ad hoc committee;

• a legislative update from KCSD Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan; and

• an executive session to discuss as yet undisclosed employment matters.

The board will also meet Wednesday in a special called meeting at 6 p.m. to enter executive session to discuss employment matters regarding the search for a new superintendent.

Both meetings will take place at the district’s offices, 2029 West DeKalb St. in Camden.
