North Central Middle School (NCMS) Principal Dr. Burch Richardson will have a new job starting July 1: Kershaw County School District (KCSD) Professional Development Director.

According to a KCSD press release, as part of a post-executive session action Tuesday night selected Richardson to replace current director Steve Abbott, who is retiring. The motion trustees voted on Tuesday night did not specifically mention Richardson or the professional development director position, presumably waiting to release the information to the public in order to officially extend the offer to Richardson first.

“Dr. Richardson has done an extremely effective job of using professional development in his school to promote academic growth,” KCSD Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan said in the press release. “He also has tremendous credibility and a good understanding of the district’s professional development needs.”

Richardson became NCMS’ principal in 2004 after serving in the same role at Hillcrest Middle School for three years. Under his leadership, both middle schools’ state report card ratings increased to “Good.”

The district named Richardson its 2007 Principal of the Year and 2008 Reading Administrator of the Year.

Richardson served as a high school teacher for 15 years, during which time he was twice chosen as his schools’ teacher of the year. He also served as middle school assistant principal for five years.

Richardson holds an educational administration doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University, a Master of Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina.
