THE CAMDEN GIRLS’ 4 X 400-meter relay team won the AAA Upper State title with a school-record time of 4:13 to advance to Saturday’s state meet at Spring Valley. Team members, from left, are Staci Sumpter, Carleigh Vaughn, Imani Wyatt and Deniah Arthur.

Led by the Lady Bulldogs’ AAA Upper State champion 4 x 400-meter relay team, the Camden High School track and field program qualified four individuals into six events in the AAA state championships to be held at Spring Valley High School on Saturday.

In last Saturday’s AAA Upper State qualifier at Broome High School, the Camden quartet of Deniah Arthur, Staci Sumpter, Carleigh Vaughn and Imani Wyatt not only won the 4 x 400-meter relay but, they did so in a school-record time of  4:13.

Three members of the Lady Bulldogs’ relay team also qualified to compete in multiple individual track events. Wyatt, a freshman, won the Upper State title in the 400-meter hurdles with her winning time of 1:10.  Wyatt also qualified in the 100-meter hurdles with a CHS record time of 17.33 seconds.

Sumpter, a sophomore, qualified to compete in the 100- and 200-meter races this Saturday in Columbia with times of 12.82 and 26.02; the latter being a new personal best in that event.  Sumpter’s qualifying time of 26.02 in the 200 Meter race was a personal best for her in that event. Another sophomore, Arthur, qualified for the state meet with a time of 1:01 in the 400 meters.

Along with the 4 x 400-meter relay team and Wyatt in the 100-meter hurdles, the Camden boys’ 4 x 800-meter relay team of Garrett Lawson, Sam Messinides, Pavlos Patoulas and Caden Ralph, also broke the CHS standard in that event with a final time of 8:59 in Spartanburg to finish fifth, one spot away from qualifying for the state meet.

Several Camden athletes achieved personal best efforts at the Upper State Meet at Broome. They included Darrion Allen in shot put with his throw of 39-11; Kiana Doby in discus with her throw of 62-11 and Messinides with his time of 5:02 in the 1,600-meter run.
