ADORNED WITH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP medals, the Camden 4 x 400-meter relay team of, from left, Staci Sumpter, Carleigh Vaughn, Imani Wyatt and Deniah Arthur clutch to the baton which they passed to each other in their victory.

Heading into Saturday’s AAA state track and field meet at Spring Valley High School as the top seed, the Camden High girls’ 4 x 400-meter relay team left the track at Harry Parone Stadium as they entered it … as the best quartet in the state.

Running a final time of 4:10.15, the Lady Bulldog quartet of Staci Sumpter, Carleigh Vaughn, Imani Wyatt and Deniah Arthur saved their best day on the track for their final race of the season as they set a new school record in the event in the process. Hanahan was second at a time of 4:11.34.

The Camden foursome is made up of all underclassmen: Arthur and Sumpter are both sophomores with Vaughn and Wyatt being freshmen.

“I have never been prouder of a group of girls as I was on Saturday,” said CHS head track coach Emet Reyes, who has coached the sport for 13 seasons. “We improved our times tremendously the last month and with our performance at the Upper State meet (one week earlier) we were the number one seed and had Lane 4 (in the state meet),which is the preferred lane.

“Angela Brennen is the head coach of the girls’ team and in charge of the relay team and has done a great job all year.”

As a team, the Lady Bulldogs finished 12th in the state meet.

Individually, Wyatt finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal record of 1:09.90. She was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best clocking of 17.78. Sumpter was seventh in both the 100-meter dash and in the 200 meter dash with personal best times of 12.71 and 25.82 seconds, respectively. Arthur competed in the 400-meter race and placed fifth, finishing with her best time of 1:00.89 in that event.

Lawson takes a third and a fourth in 4A sprint races: Lugoff-Elgin junior sprinter Gatlin Lawson finished third in the 200-meter dash and fourth in the 100-meter dash in Saturday’s 4A state meet at Spring Valley.

The Demon junior ran a personal record 21.59 seconds in the 200-meter dash and hit the wire at 10.65 seconds in the 100-meter dash.
