We hope everyone has enjoyed a relaxing holiday weekend. Few things are nicer, especially in a place as lovely as Kershaw County, than having time to sit back and smell the roses.

However, we also truly hope everyone remembered those who were not here with us this weekend because they gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. In fact, it is probably noteworthy to remember that Memorial Day is less about celebration and more about remembrance. Obviously, we should cherish and celebrate our freedoms and honor our veterans -- indeed, we should do that every day, even as we count our blessings -- but it absolutely bears remembering that we are observing, remembering and expressing deep and heartfelt gratitude to those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms -- giving their lives in our nation’s conflicts.

It doesn’t matter where you are on the political spectrum; it only matters that you clearly understand you are allowed the freedom to hold and express those beliefs in large part because of the sacrifices those people made.

So celebrate freedom, but take a moment, if you have not already done so, to remember and thank the fallen.

They gave all for us.

They deserve our gratitude and our respect.
