Another school year is done; the graduates are going out into the world; the underclass students taking a breather before moving forward in August. Our guess is their teachers -- indeed all school employees -- are doing the very same thing.

Enjoy yourselves! You earned it.

But even with a two month break underway, there are some things to keep in mind.

First, have a great time, but please be safe. School may not be in session, but it pays to keep that same level of awareness you had during the school year, stick to the school zone speed limits and remain alert in those places. There are always people working in schools, even in the summer and especially now with a number of new construction projects getting underway. In some places, such as ball fields, schools where there are summer learning programs underway and, of course, the Jackson Teen Center, there are quite a few people -- especially kids -- going in and out of those areas.

As to all of you students on summer vacation, we certainly hope you have a fun, happy and productive summer. There are all kinds of great activities to enjoy, especially here in Kershaw County, and all manner of productive and interesting ways to spend your time. In all honesty, there should be no reason whatsoever for anyone to be bored.

On the other hand, there is also not a thing wrong with spending a little down time doing absolutely nothing – everyone needs to recharge the batteries at some point.

So enjoy the summer and we’ll see everyone again in the fall!
