A man living on Whiting Way in Elgin held a burglar at gunpoint during the early morning hours Tuesday after the suspect allegedly assaulted the man’s 11-year-old son.

According to a Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) press release, deputies arrested Nathaniel Brady Roberts, 23, of Koon Road, Elgin, and charged him with first-degree burglary and third-degree assault and battery.

Dispatchers received an alarm activation notice from the Whiting Way residence at 1:22 a.m. Tuesday, according to the press release; deputies arrived seven minutes later at 1:29 a.m. and found the homeowner holding Roberts at gunpoint. The man stated that their burglar alarm woke the family up and that he and his wife also heard their son screaming that someone had broken into the house. As the parents went to find their son, Roberts allegedly assaulted the boy. A 16-year-old family friend who had been spending the night reportedly came to the 11-year-old’s defense and began fighting with Roberts. Meanwhile, the homeowner retrieved his lawfully possessed handgun and held Roberts, who appeared to be intoxicated, for deputies.

After being arrested, Roberts reportedly began striking his head against the cage inside a patrol car and had to be taken to KershawHealth for treatment. Deputies then transported him to the county jail where he was still being held as of Thursday afternoon. According to online court records, a judge set $1,500 bond for the assault charge and $10,000 for the burglary charge.

According to the KCSO, law enforcement officers have arrested Roberts previously for second- and third-degree burglary, driving without a license, giving false information and contempt of court. Online court records do not show any previous Kershaw County cases against him.
