Editorial: Upcoming election

Tuesday is an election day, with a race for Kershaw County Board of School Trustees as well as the statewide Democratic and Republican primary elections. We are here to encourage all registered voters to get out and vote.

Too often, primaries are ignored by too many voters. We wouldn’t go so far as to say that’s what was intended by those who put together that system so many years ago, but we would admit that the primary system is annoying, cumbersome and dangerous.

Yes, we used the word dangerous.

We believe that, because of the first two elements, annoying and cumbersome, the danger is that fringe candidates have better chances of being put into office. An outsider is not necessarily a bad thing -- indeed, we are also advocates of term limits -- but problems can arise when unqualified and too often unhinged persons wind up in office because a small but determined group of “true believers” actually voted while the rest of the electorate stayed home, secure in the knowledge that such a thing could never happen.

Such things can absolutely happen.

So get out and vote, but if you cannot or will not vote intelligently or responsibly, then, by all means, stay home.
