Editorial: River parcel meetings

Those who wish to give their opinions regarding the property along the Wateree River in Lugoff that Kershaw County bought back in January will have two opportunities to do so this week.

Kershaw County will be holding two public input sessions this week, one tonight and one Thursday night. The meetings are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. both days. Tonight’s meeting will be held at the Kershaw County Recreation Department in Camden; Thursday’s meeting will be held at the Lugoff Fire Department in Lugoff.

The idea is to solicit ideas and input as to what exactly should go on riverfront property the county just bought. The parcel is located in Lugoff just past the bridge and adjacent to the U.S. 1 boat landing. The idea, according to county officials, is to develop a public green space by the river. There are many possibilities and ideas -- a riverwalk, nature trails, fishing access, boat access, picnic areas, for example -- and the process is going to take time and long-term planning.

Not only is this an opportunity to give your input, perhaps more importantly it is an opportunity to receive information. Indeed, with confusion, innuendo, and the occasional outright falsehood being circulated ever since the county acquired the property, this would be an opportune time to personally find out, directly from the source, exactly what the property entails, what can realistically be done and what absolutely cannot be done.

We urge everyone who is interested to attend one or both meetings.
