CHS hosts 7-on-7 passing tourney, Hogmen Challenge

CAMDEN WIDE RECEIVER Landon Goodwin tumbles into the end zone after coming down with this pass in Wednesday’s passing league game. The Bulldogs will host a 15-team tournament next Wednesday.

Camden High School will host 12 football programs from throughout the state in the Battle of Camden 7-on-7 passing league shootout and Hogmen Challenge to be held at the school’s practice fields on Wednesday, June 27.

In addition to the host Bulldogs, other schools participating will be Andrew Jackson, A.C. Flora, Ben Lippen, Blythewood, Chesterfield, Hillcrest, Lower Richland, Myrtle Beach, Nation Ford, River Bluff, Robert E. Lee Academy and Westwood. Camden and Westwood will also field junior varsity teams to round out the field.

Among the visiting players slated to participate in the tournament are 4-star Westwood rising senior defensive back Cameron Smith and 4-star rising junior Myrtle Beach quarterback Luke Doty.

The 7-on-7 --- non-contact --- competition will have three pools of five teams each playing simultaneously in a round robin format before being cross-seeded into a single-elimination tournament. There will be a lunch break after round robin play. The first games in each pool will begin at 9:30 a.m. and there will a break for lunch at 11:45 a.m. Single elimination tourney play will begin at 1:05 p.m. with the championship game slated to start at 3 p.m. at the main field inside the Camden High Athletic Complex.

The events are free and open to the public and concession stands will be in operation at both sites throughout the course of the day. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the winning team.

Here are the pods, teams, fields on which games will be played and starting times:

Pod A: Camden, Nation Ford, River Bluff, Blythewood, Hillcrest; main field located within the track at the Camden High Athletic Complex on Bramblewood Plantation Rd., off Ehrenclou Drive; 9:30 a.m.: Camden vs. Nation Ford, River Bluff vs. Blythewood; 10:05 a.m.: Camden vs. River Bluff, Blythewood vs. Hillcrest; 10:40 a.m.: Camden vs. Blythewood, Nation Ford vs. Hillcrest; 11:15 a.m.: Camden vs. Hillcrest, Nation Ford vs. River Bluff; 11:50 a.m.: Nation Ford vs. Blythewood, River Bluff vs. Hillcrest

(Note: Fans may watch from the grandstands on each side of the field.)

Pod B: Westwood, A.C. Flora, Myrtle Beach Lower Richland, Andrew Jackson; soccer practice field located alongside the track at the Camden High Athletic Complex on Bramblewood Plantation Rd., off Ehrenclou Drive; 9:30 a.m.: Westwood vs. A.C. Flora, Myrtle Beach vs. Lower Richland; 10:05 a.m.: Westwood vs. Myrtle Beach, Lower Richland vs. Andrew Jackson; 10:40 a.m.: Westwood vs. Lower Richland, A.C. Flora vs. Andrew Jackson; 11:15 a.m.: Westwood vs. Andrew Jackson, A.C. Flora vs. Myrtle Beach; 11:50 a.m.: A.C. Flora vs. Lower Richland, Myrtle Beach vs. Andrew Jackson

Lee Academy, Camden JVs, Westwood JVs, River Bluff, Blythewood, Hillcrest; Camden High School main practice field located behind the school’s Wellness Center alongside York Street; 9:30 a.m.: Camden JVs vs. Robert E. Lee Academy, Chesterfield vs. Westwood JVs; 10:05 a.m.: Robert E. Lee Academy vs. Westwood JVs, Chesterfield vs. Ben Lippen; 10:40 a.m.: Robert E. Lee Academy vs. Chesterfield, Camden JVs vs. Ben Lippen; 11:15 a.m.: Robert E. Lee Academy vs. Ben Lippen, Camden JVs vs. Westwood JVs; 11:50 a.m.: Camden JVs vs. Chesterfield, Westwood JVs vs. Ben Lippen

Hogmen Challenge: The Hogmen Challenge will be held at the CHS practice field, located beside the school gym. The event will test linemen’s speed, agility and overall competitiveness. The Hogmen Challenge begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.
