The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) arrested a Westville woman Thursday for shooting another Westville woman on Sunday night.

According to a KCSO press release issued late Thursday afternoon, deputies arrested Stacey McClintock Catoe, 43, of Damascus Church Road, Westville, for the murder of Brenda Marie Coates, 54, also of Westville.

In the press release, KCSO officials reported that deputies responded to the shooting incident at the intersection of U.S. 521 and Catoe Road just south of the Carolina Motorsports Park around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Responding deputies found Coates deceased, sitting in her car, with a gunshot wound to the neck. Investigators were called to the scene and were advised that Catoe’s vehicle was seen leaving the incident location.

While investigators made several attempts to contact Catoe, another investigator obtained search warrants for vehicle and residence. Investigators eventually located Catoe and her vehicle and executed the search warrant for the car. Inside the vehicle, investigators found a .380 caliber pistol and one spent .380 shell casing. Catoe advised investigators she did not wish to speak with them until she had contacted her attorney.

Investigators seized the car, as well as the vehicle in which the victim had been. An investigator located and seized what appeared to be a .380 caliber bullet that had lodged inside the vehicle. S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) crime scene agents processed both vehicles at KCSO headquarters for DNA and gunpowder residue evidence. The .380 pistol, spent shell casing and.380 caliber bullet were then sent to SLED for processing.

On Thursday, the lead investigator received confirmation from SLED that the bullet that killed Coates came from the .380 pistol seized from Catoe’s vehicle. The investigator conferred with prosecutors from the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office and obtained an arrest warrant for Catoe charging her with murder.

Catoe, accompanied by her attorneys, voluntarily surrendered herself to KCSO investigators at the Kershaw County Detention Center at about 2 p.m. Thursday. She has one prior arrest for DUI, in 1997, according to the KCSO’s press release.
