Kershaw County has been named an All-America City by the National Civic League (NCL).

This is a prestigious honor – Kershaw County is one of just 10 entities -- and the only county -- in the country that received the honor out of more than 400 cities, towns and counties that underwent the application process.

We realize the appellation is a little confusing -- a county being named an All-America City? -- but the All-America City recognition is for communities -- municipal or county -- that demonstrate civic engagement practices that are inspirational, inclusive and promising in their ability to unite members of the community to collectively and collaboratively help solve our country’s most pressing and complex issues.

In Kershaw County’s case, the NCL noted that “Kershaw County embraces the changing faces of its rapidly growing community, balancing its rural past and suburban future, with its business owners, residents and elected officials reflecting that diversity and building programs to ensure equity in healthcare, education and economic growth.”

In other words, we may have our problems, we may have our differences, we may even have our disagreements, but we all want the same thing -- a wonderful place to live, work and play and raise our children and grandchildren -- and we are willing to come together to work hard for a common vision and a bright future.

So we offer the loudest shout out we can possibly muster to the group of folks, led by Laurey Carpenter, executive director of the PLAY Foundation in Kershaw County, who actually made this happen. This group worked very hard to tell Kershaw County’s story to the rest of the nation -- and that hard work and love for our community shined through.

Congratulations, thanks, and bravissimo!!!
