A story on today’s front page by senior writer Martin L. Cahn outlines the beginnings of what looks like some very positive changes in the works for River Oaks Shopping Center, located on U.S. 1 at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Springdale Drive.

The property is better known as the location of the former Kmart store, which closed in 2016.

What or who, exactly, is coming is not known -- yet -- but Camden City Council seems to be pretty excited about it -- excited enough to annex the 13-acre property and offer Bright-Meyers 2001 LLC, the commercial developer interested in buying the property, some attractive incentives to develop/redevelop it.

In our view, we should all be excited about this. Not only is someone coming in with the financial wherewithal to improve a potentially serious eyesore property right on the gateway to Camden, but if all goes well, this will generate significant retail revenues and by extrapolation, significantly improve the tax base.

That can only be good news.

So here’s a cautiously optimistic “attaboy” to all involved -- we believe, if all goes as planned, it can be a win/win and are pulling for a positive, successful outcome.
