Watch out for our elected political leaders who think we are stupid and that we don’t read carefully, think critically, study the issues or trust ourselves instead of blindly following them. Politicians have learned to fool us with catchy euphemisms like “Moral Mondays,” “Wasteful Wednesdays,” “Freedom Caucus,” “Americans for Prosperity,” etc. We will not be fooled. We demand straight-forward and verifiable talk.

Ralph Norman, our 5th District Republican representative in the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., seems to be horrified about “Wasteful Wednesdays.” He recently attacked the NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) for wasteful spending. Mind you, the amount of $35,000 for grants to house artists for events, concerts or workshops is less than pennies in comparison to the recent tax cut which shamefully, greatly benefitted the already wealthy while bringing our national deficit for the first time to more than $20 trillion -- a deficit which tax payers will have to shoulder. No wonder our wealthy congressmen, including the multimillionaire Ralph Norman, are now trying to stir our anger about helping poor artists while they, our ”leaders,” work to reduce Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. He suggests that the NEA is literally paying for housing. That his suggestion is ludicrous does not deter him who is intent on stirring self-righteous anger of citizens whose lives are being made harder by the tax burden of wars and recent huge tax cuts (that helped powerful corporations and the 1 percent). Never mind that our children’s lives derive hope and joy from great theater and music and art for a miniscule financial commitment of tax dollars. Wake up, citizens! Read between the lines. Dare to protect yourselves from false “profits.”
