Kershaw County Post 17’s best-of-five series with Sumter for the Midlands Region title is one of four second round state American Legion pairings which will determine the four teams which will enter the double-elimination South Carolina American Legion State Tournament Championship to be conducted the week of July 23.

In the Coastal Region, defending state champion Florence takes on Goose Creek/Charleston after both sides won their first round series in three games.

In the Upstate region, 2016 national champion Chapin-Newberry --- whose first round series with Anderson was tied at 1-1 before Anderson forfeited the rest of the series due to a lack of players, will take on Greenwood. The Piedmont Region series will have Fort Mill, which supplanted Post 17 atop this week’s state American Legion poll after beating Spartanburg in four games, meeting Gaffney, which swept three from Rock Hill.

The winner of the Post 17 vs. Sumter series will travel to meet the Coastal Region winner on either Monday, July 23 or, Tuesday, July 24 in the first game of the double-elimination state tournament. In the other half of the bracket, the Upstate Region winner heads to meet the Piedmont champion.

After the first night of the event is played at home field sites, the scene shifts to Spirit Communications Park in Columbia on Wednesday, July 25. The winner of the Midlands vs. Coastal region contest will play in a winners’ bracket game at 7 p.m. against the winner of the first round Upstate vs. Piedmont region game at the 9,000-plus seat minor league park located off Bull Street with the losers of the first night contests  playing an elimination contest at 3 p.m. that day.

South Carolina gets two slots in Southeast Regional tourney: In news coming out of the South Carolina American Legion Baseball office, it was confirmed that both the champion and second-place finisher from the South Carolina state tournament will advance into the Southeast Regionals to be held at McCrary Park in Asheboro, N.C., on Aug. 8-12.

The runner-up from the Palmetto State gets into the Southeast Regional to take the place of the slot originally allotted to the Georgia state champion. Since the state of Georgia has dropped American Legion Baseball, it created an opening in the eight-team regional tourney.
