WORKERS PUT the finishing touches on one of the two entrances into Zemp Stadium, which has undergone extensive changes in time for the 2018 Camden High football season.

The Camden High School football program will host a grand re-opening celebration at the newly renovated Zemp Stadium tonight.

The gates to the stadium will open at 6 p.m. with the Bulldogs’ staging their first football practice for the 2018 season beginning at 7 p.m.

Among the changes at the south Broad St. facility is a new grandstand on the west side of the stadium which will revert to being the home side of the field. The grandstand includes five rows of stadium seating and the entire middle section of bleachers having chair backs. There are two new entryways leading fans into the stadium while the stadium lights have been replaced, as well.

Zemp Stadium will host the 43rd annual Camden Shrine Club Football Jamboree on Friday, Aug. 10. One week later, the Bulldogs play host to in-county rival North Central to kick off the 2018 regular season.

Zemp Stadium hosted its first football game on Sept. 27, 1929 and was officially dedicated on Nov. 7, 1929. At 89 years old, it is the oldest stadium still being used for high school football games in the state of South Carolina.

Bulldog Club membership drive in full swing: The Camden High School Bulldog Club membership drive is in full swing for the 2018-2019 school year.

The organization, founded in 1952, provides financial assistance to all athletic programs at the school through the membership drive and various fundraising activities.

The Camden Bulldog Club Board is composed of parent representatives for each sport, school and community representatives, CHS Athletic Director Brian Rimpf and CHS Principal Dan Matthews. Amanda Kendall will serve as this year’s Bulldog Club President.

Each year the Camden Bulldog Club is asked to fund equipment and improvement of facilities, pay tournament entry fees and provide meals for playoff teams. The club sponsors two “Meet the Bulldogs” programs to introduce players and coaches and encourages all Bulldog Club members to attend these programs.

To encourage attendance at games, the club provides fall, winter and spring sports posters. The club hosts the annual Bulldog Athletic Banquet to recognize the hard work and accomplishments of our student-athletes and coaches.  More than 60 individual awards are given as well as the presentation of senior plaques, first-year block “C” letters and two $500 college scholarships. Fundraisers, in addition to the membership drive, include the Miss Gold and Black pageant, the Bulldog Spirit Shoppe and program sales at the Carolina Cup steeplechase races.
