Today, readers will notice quite a number of letters to the editor in today’s paper.

In fact, we are receiving a lot of letters from readers these days, which to us is a very good thing.

The C-I has always sought to provide a sounding board and a forum for a diversity of opinions. We believe this is an important function and service of a community newspaper and we are glad to see people taking part. It shows an engaged readership and it reflects the fact that people in this community care about what goes on here. That said, we do insist on a few things -- these should be obvious, but they bear mentioning.

First, the C-I will edit as it sees fit. Mostly, we will correct spelling errors and try to make sure you don’t split your infinitives, dangle your participles, or otherwise commit egregious sins of grammar. We don’t want to lose your voice or your meaning, but we will strive to ensure clarity.

Occasionally, we will have to edit for content. For example, we will not knowingly print something we know is not true, nor will we allow anyone to libel anyone else. We also don’t allow plagiarism -- do your own work, please. Finally, in this age of “songbirds” and grass root campaigns, we will not print obvious marketing pieces, candidate endorsements or advocacy boilerplates. Such items are printed via paid advertisement.

While we remain open minded and lenient, ultimately, we make the final decisions as to what is and is not appropriate for our op/ed section -- and those decisions are not up for debate.

Nonetheless we do love to hear from you and we will work with you in every way to ensure you can have a forum to express your opinions, ask your questions, make your suggestions, sing your praises and occasionally vent your spleen.

So, by all means, please keep reading -- and writing!
