More than 10 years ago, we, as mayor of Camden and executive director of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce, tried to develop support and interest in pursuing All-America City status for Camden or for Kershaw County. We failed completely! We could not generate the support for the tremendous effort from many people this would require.

We congratulate the many volunteers and organizations that made it possible for Kershaw County to earn this distinction! It took many hours of hard work to get this job done. Kershaw County Chairman Julian Burns, Mayor Alfred Mae Drakeford of Camden, Mayor Melissa Emmons of Elgin and Mayor Charles McCoy of Bethune and their council members and employees are to be commended for their leadership and support for a job well done! Other elected officials and volunteers were also vital for this task.

This designation will forever make us an All-America County (City or Town) forever! We will reap the benefits of these hard working leaders and volunteers for many years to come.

Thank them when you see them.
