JOSH BOONE (right) is congratulated by Kershaw County Post 17 American Legion head baseball coach Stephen Carmon after Boone won the 2018 South Carolina American Legion Baseball Scholarship.

Given the choice, Josh Boone would much rather have been playing in the 2018 South Carolina American Legion Baseball Tournament than watching it from the stands as a spectator last week at Spirit Communications Park in Columbia.

Boone, a 2018 Lugoff-Elgin graduate and starting outfielder for the Kershaw County Post 17 American Legion baseball team the past two summers, took to the playing surface at the home of the class A Columbia Fireflies when he was honored as the recipient of the South Carolina American Legion Baseball Scholarship.

Boone, who is expected to enroll and will try and walk-onto the baseball team at USC-Lancaster in the next few weeks, was selected from players who play on the Palmetto’s State’s 81 American Legion baseball squads. He was joined for the ceremony, which was held at Chapin-Newberry defeated Sumter for the state title, by first-year P-17 head coach Stephen Carmon.

Post 17 finished the 2018 campaign with a 22-8 record which included winning the League III championship. The locals were defeated by Sumter, 6-4, in the fifth and deciding game of their second round state playoff series which decided the fourth and final entry into the state tournament.

A three-year member of the 17ers, Boone played all three outfield positions and collected 35 hits with five doubles, two triples, a home run while scoring 28 runs and driving in24 over the past two seasons. He was also perfect in 10 stolen base attempts in 2017 and 2018. This past summer, he had a .982 fielding percentage.

In his three years playing American Legion baseball for Post 17, Boone helped the squad to a combined 54 victories in 78 games.

Boone became the first Post 17 player to be accorded the South Carolina American Legion Baseball Scholarship after Mike Jones received the stipend in 2006.
