Both the Camden and Lugoff-Elgin baseball teams have accepted invitations to play in the 2019 NatureChem Invitational Tournament.

The annual preseason event, which brings together 12 of the top varsity baseball teams in the Palmetto State, will be played on Thursday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 3, 2019, at River Bluff and Lexington high schools.

All teams will play one game per day and also be involved in a player competition event on Saturday. The brackets are expected to be released in the fall.

Camden is coming off a 12-17 in which Denny Beckley’s squad finished second in Region 4-AAA and advanced to the final round of the district tournament. The Bulldogs had two seniors on its 2017 roster and lose one starter from that squad. Camden will be the lone non-4A or, 5A entry in the Lexington County field.

L-E will be making its second consecutive appearance in the NatureChem tourney. The Demons, who finished with a 21-9 record and advanced to the 4A Lower State final four this past season, went 2-1 in the event last March. L-E head coach Randy Stokes will have to find replacements for four starters from last year’s squad.

Besides the two Kershaw County entries, the 12-team field also includes defending 5A state champion Dorman, 5A state runner-up, River Bluff; 5A Lower State finalists Dutch Fork and Lexington; 5A District 5 runner-up Sumter and 5A playoff entry Mauldin.

From the 4A ranks will be 2017 Upper State finalist Wren, District 4 champion and runners-up Airport and Belton-Honea Path, respectively.

North Augusta, which did not make the state tourney field in class 4A, rounds out the field of invited programs.
