Betty and Larry Slade

Betty and Larry Slade of Camden are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They were united in marriage on May 11, 1968, at the First Baptist Church of Camden by Pastor Jim Cloninger. They have been blessed with two children: Robert Slade and his wife, Elizabeth Lamp Slade; and Laurie Slade Funderburk and her husband Harold Williams (Bill) Funderburk Jr.; and four grandchildren, Slade Horton Funderburk, Jonathan Russell Slade, Matthew Thomas Slade, and Burch Hough Funderburk.

A graduate of Baron DeKalb High School where she was a standout basketball player, and a graduate of the Palmer School of Business, Betty Horton Slade retired from the city of Camden after serving as city clerk for 28 years. Betty is the president of the Kershaw County Forest Landowners Association, secretary-treasurer of the Kershaw County Farmers Market, sings for the First Baptist Church of Camden choir, and plays piano at local nursing homes and for the Men’s Quartet at the church.

Larry Slade is a graduate of Frankfurt American High School, is a Vietnam War Veteran, and is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He retired from Weylchem. Larry is a member of American Legion Post 17 and serves as quartermaster for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5928. Larry volunteers for the Disabled Veteran Program, plays bass clarinet in the Camden Community Concert Band and in the First Baptist Church of Camden orchestra, and is a volunteer mentor for the Kershaw County Robotics Team.

The devoted couple shows no signs of slowing down and is always on the lookout for adventure. They recently celebrated their anniversary by taking their grandsons on an epic train trip across the country to see the Grand Canyon.
