While most of Camden is begging for rain, the Camden High girls’ cross country team got caught in a late Tuesday afternoon downpour in Great Falls.

Running while sheets of rain pounded the area, the Lady Bulldogs battled the elements and came home with their second straight win by taking the six-team meet with 31 points.

The boys’ portion of the race was cancelled due to the weather.

The Lady Bulldogs were followed by Buford (51), Great Falls (71), Lancaster (73), Richard Winn Academy (127) and Region 4-AAA foe Chester with 168.

Camden runners finished second, third, fourth and sixth to secure the victory. Mary-Ashton Blanks was second overall in a time of 25:43. She was followed to the line by teammates McKenzie Taylor (27:31) and Mell Boucher (28:05), who were third and fourth, respectively. Eleni Patoulas came in sixth for Mark Chickering’s harriers in a time of 29:01

“The race was pretty much chaos,” Chickering said of the meet. “The race started 10 minutes early in a downpour. We scrambled to get to the start line and barely made it. McKenzie Taylor had another strong performance as did Mary-Ashton, Mell and Eleni.

“The track was slow and slippery. Our girls were sliding and falling all over the course. As you can by their times, the track was slow. We’ll have a better idea how fast we are this weekend at the Coaches Classic at Sandhills.”

Correction: In a recent edition of the Chronicle-Independent, a photo of Camden cross country runner Elizabeth West was misidentified as being Mary-Ashton Blanks. The C-I regrets the error and any confusion which it may have caused.
