Looking for something a little different to do this weekend?

Grab the family and come spend a little time at FireFest this Saturday. The event, now in its 23rd year, is put together by the fire services in Kershaw County, and showcases our fire and emergency services. It also is the kick-off for National Fire Safety and Prevention Week.

The event starts at 9 a.m. Saturday with a parade of new and antique fire trucks and emergency vehicles that will cruise from Camden City Hall down Rutledge and Broad Streets. After the parade, activities at the Camden City Arena will run from 9:30 to around 2 p.m. and will include a wide variety of family-fun activities and demonstrations, including Junior Explorer competitions, firefighting demonstrations, a giant Kids Zone, a car cruise-in, performances from local dance teams, and more than 70 arts, crafts and food vendors.

While the event is obviously meant to be fun, we cannot stress enough just how important it is that everyone know as much about safety in general and fire safety in particular. FireFest is a great event, not only from a standpoint of good, clean family-oriented activities, but as a forum for people to learn more about what they can do to help our firefighters and first responders protect us.

Remember, no matter how impressive our firefighters and first responders are -- and make no mistake, we are blessed to have some of the finest fire and first responder services to be found anywhere -- the fact remains that it still takes time to respond to an emergency call. Prevention and planning are literally the keys to survival. It’s worth it to take a little time to find out more, and FireFest is a great forum to do just that.

Besides, it’s a lot of fun!
