Students and teachers of Camden, Lugoff and Wateree Elementary Schools are expecting to start the second half of the school year in brand-new buildings when they return from Christmas break on Jan. 7. So, with three new schools rapidly approaching completion, the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) is working to finalize plans to make the transitions to new facilities as seamless as possible.

Billy Smith, KCSD Operations Director and Eddie Rodelsperger of Pike-McFarland-Hall Consultants, gave a brief update on the progress of this during the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees during the board’s meeting Tuesday.

Final overhead inspections for the three new elementary schools are expected to be completed as of today, and the following are the remaining target dates for all the upcoming building milestones:

• Nov. 10 - Cabling complete, motion detectors installed, and access controls completed, all schools

• Nov. 15 - final inspection for Camden Elementary School

• Interactive flat screens and TVs installed all schools by Nov. 23

• Nov. 26 - final inspection for Wateree Elementary School

• Nov. 27 - final inspection for Lugoff Elementary School

• IP/Voice phones installed all schools by Dec. 15

• Move existing kitchen equipment all schools by Dec. 21

• Move existing computers and printers all schools by Dec. 21

• New and transferred network equipment installed all schools by Dec. 23

Each school will have three playgrounds; all playground equipment for all three schools is expected to arrive at all schools on Nov. 16. At CES, all three playgrounds will be completed by Nov. 29, Smith said.

At LES, the Pre-K/Special Needs playground will be installed by Nov. 29, however, the other two playgrounds will not be installed until the existing building is demolished and all portable structures are removed.

At WES, Pre-K-Special Needs and Intermediate Playgrounds are expected to be completed by Nov. 29, with the third playground completed after existing septic tanks are removed.

For furniture, fixtures and equipment (FFE) and teachers’ personal supplies, the target dates are as follows:

• Boxes to teachers for moving personal items by Nov. 1

• Teacher’s personal items moved by Dec. 23

• FFE to be on site at Camden Elementary School Nov. 16. Set up and install to take one week.

• FFE to be on site at Lugoff Elementary School Nov. 23. Set up and install to take one week.

• FFE to be on site at Wateree Elementary School Nov. 29. Set up and install to take one week.

“This is not the final plan – we are almost there –but these are our current target dates,” Smith said.

He said plans are expected to be discussed and verified during the Oct. 11 owner-architect-contractor (OAC) meetings.
