Every community has a population of homeless individuals and Kershaw County is no exception. Unemployment, poor mental or physical health, drug or alcohol addiction, domestic violence and family or relationship breakdowns are just a few reasons why men, women and children may find themselves hungry and living on the street.

Our mission is simple: the mission for Food For the Soul is to serve as a Christ-like ministry, committed to provide food and shelter, awakening hope and honoring dignity to those in need in Kershaw County.

FFTS opened nine years ago. It was simple soup kitchen open four days a week for lunch and providing beds when the temperatures dropped below freezing at night. Presently, FFTS serves lunch to an average of 60 people per day. The shelter is open seven days a week for those needing a place to sleep, wash their clothes, and eat dinner. Breakfast is served daily to an average of 30 guests. On Mondays, FFTS prepares food and delivers it Bethune and Cassatt, serving those who live in outlying areas. FFTS is also the emergency shelter for Kershaw County citizens with handicaps or disabilities.

A popular misconception is that FFTS is funded by the United Way. FFTS is an independent 501(c)(3) organization that no longer partners with the United Way. We receive financial assistance from Kershaw County, grants, fundraising and business and individual donations.

How can you help? One, make a donation. All donations are tax deductible. Two, follow us on Facebook or visit our webpage at to see what is going on in the kitchen. Three, participate in one of our fundraisers. Four, click Amazon Smile whenever you make a purchase through Amazon or Amazon Prime. Follow the link and click on FFTS and Amazon pays a percentage of every purchase to us. Five, buy sod at the market on Saturdays. Six, volunteer. This is the heart and soul of the soup kitchen. Our volunteers prep, cook and serve each breakfast and lunch. There are also lots of off-site opportunities to help out and make a difference in the community. For more info call (803) 432-4771.
