A grand historic property and a well-loved and well-respected institution will share a well-deserved bright future together. The property located on Knights Hill Road in Camden, known as Beechwood, will be the future home of the Karesh Long Term Care Center, also known as the Karesh Wing.

Details of the situation are well-covered in Senior Writer Martin L. Cahn’s front page story about the sale, but suffice it to say that we believe this is not only a wonderful turn of events but, more important, it is an appropriate conclusion to a story that has been on hiatus for quite some time.

The fate of the Beechwood property has been in question for nearly more than a decade now, with several proposals over the years brought forth -- admittedly, some better than others -- only to be shot down along the way.

Regardless of one’s feelings for the future of the Beechwood property, we believe only good can come from this. To that end, we would like to give a big thank you and a hearty pat on the back to those who made it happen, including the Health Services District of Kershaw County board of directors; Ed Royal and Austin Sheheen, who have been handling the day-to-day and business affairs for Beechwood; and especially to the very generous and community-minded owner of the Beechwood property, Lucy Lindsay, who saw a wonderful opportunity for the community and is making it happen with a deeply discounted price for the property.

This is a truly wonderful turn of events.
