Letter: No House 52 forum disappointing

It is disappointing that there will not be a public, non-partisan candidate forum for the South Carolina House 52 candidates. Such forums are very useful in terms of citizens being able to hear candidates dig deeper and more specifically into the issues.

Along with more traditional media, innovations like live streaming and podcasts make such forums easily accessible to large numbers of voters. A great example of this was the forum organized by high school students this past spring for sheriff candidates.

Because no forum for House 52 candidates will be held, voters are left with platitudes and slogans without specifics, yard signs, cliché-filled billboards and media ads, slick mailings prepared by  consultants, robo calls, and partisan events featuring free food, entertainment and shallow stump speeches. Basically fluff. Kissing babies is probably also in there somewhere.

I always thought that a campaign was supposed to inform voters. Voters in District 52 deserve more substance than they’re getting.
