Dogs give Sisk first win by topping Dreher

In each of the past two seasons, Chapin brought an end to Lugoff-Elgin’s wrestling campaign by defeating the demons in the 4A playoffs.

Wednesday night, L-E got a measure of revenge back by defeating the visiting Eagles, 41-25, in a match held inside the Demons Den.

The hosts improved to 3-0 on the season after having dispatched of Dreher, 69-9, and Camden, 67-12, one night earlier.

“Some wins are simply bigger than others, and that is a monkey off of our backs,” said L-E head coach Ted Monroe after his 10th ranked 5A squad knocked off Chapin, which entered the season ranked sixth in 5A in the preseason poll.

Chapin opened the match with a four-point major decision at 106 pounds. The Demons then sent out Jay Wilson whose pin at 113 pounds got the hosts going. Jacob Paulson (120 pounds) and Brice Carron (126) increased the lead to 12-4 with a 3-0 and a 9-7 overtime victory respectively.

When Hunter Mathis won by technical fall at 138, it gave the Demons a 17-7 advantage before Chapin received a pin to chop the deficit to 17-13. The Demons responded with a 15-0 run with pins from but the Demons went on a 15-0 run courtesy of pins from by Eli McGee (152) and Tyquan Wright (170) sandwiching an 8-4 decision win from 160-pounder Klay Crossway to make it 32-13.

 After Chapin cut the lead to 32-19, Scotty Dean (195) won a 4-1 decision to seal the deal at 35-19. Heavyweight Aaron Miller closed out the scoring for the Demons to end it with a 41-25 win.

In the preliminary matches, L-E won seven of the eight pairings. Matthew Jackson recorded two wins, while Zeke Meshach, Tanner Misenheimer, Ethan Darwin, Kaleb Bah and Karrington Charles each recorded wins.

On Tuesday, in a match held at Camden’s Dog Pound, Hudson Jay, Wilson, Paulson, Carron, Jacob Vincent, Mathis, McGee, Crossway, Wright, Brett Carder and Scotty Dean each won both their matches while Jaden Robinson and Ethan Hix each had a victory.

Bulldogs split pair: Camden split its Tuesday matches for first-year head coach Daniel Sisk on Tuesday. The Bulldogs, ranked 19th in AAA, defeated 4A Dreher, 48-21, before falling to 5A Lugoff-Elgin in the nightcap, 67-12.

In the win over Dreher, Anthony Carrera (106 pounds), Hunter McCoy (138), Jalen Holliday (182) and Jyheem Macklin (195) recorded pins.

Hunter McKoy (145) and heavyweight JeVontae Salmond each had a pin in the loss to Lugoff-Elgin.

Demons, Dogs in tourney action this weekend: Both Camden and Lugoff-Elgin will take to the road today and Saturday for two-day tournaments.

L-E heads to Eastside High School for the Southern Slam while Camden will travel to Bluffton to compete in the May River Invitational.
