Past sheriffs, deputies were devoted to service

I am writing this letter as a retired Kershaw County deputy, in reference to statements made by our new sheriff. First of all, I want to wish him the best in his new job. Sheriff Matthews has made several statements that the people in the past in Kershaw County did not do their job.

I have been associated with the Sheriff’s Department since 1978. During that time, there have been a lot of deputies who have gone beyond their call of duty and have done an extremely good job with what they had to work with.

Our last sheriff, Steve McCaskill, brought the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office to a new level from the past. The Sheriff’s Department can only work with what the county will supply. For the new sheriff to insinuate that Steve McCaskill and Sheriff Hector Debruhl did not do their job is unfair to the people of Kershaw County.

I think Sheriff Matthews needs to stop and think before he makes some of his statements. Sheriff Matthews has some of the same people working for him that did not do their job for the past sheriff. Sheriff Matthews is going to need the cooperation of every citizen of Kershaw County.

I am writing this letter as a concerned citizen and former deputy of Kershaw County. I truly wish the new sheriff the best.
