Scrapbook -- Light up the night

Hooray for spring and summer with longer days and more light. One time I was where there was no light from town at night. We were so far out in the forest that no city lights lit up the sky. We stood amazed at the stars. There was no moon that night and light came only from the stars!

We are told that our city lights are “pollution” for some animals. Sea turtles go to the same place to nest every year. They need dark beaches, but city lights confuse them. Their young hatchlings move toward the light horizon across the sea. They do, unless city lights confuse them.

Street lights can cause light pollution. They “light up the night” unless the lights focus on the ground, where light is needed. Birds, geese and other animals that use natural light to move about are confused by our city lights.

People need light to see. Some animals are nocturnal. They move about at night. Some people also love the dark. Criminals love the dark. They do not want to be seen.

Word List: hatchlings, horizon, confuse, nocturnal.
