On Saturday, May 14, hounds from fox hunts located in North and South Carolina, as well as Virginia, will be kenneled at the Springdale Race Course for the annual Carolina Hounds Show.

Originally held in Southern Pines, N.C., for more than 30 years, the show was moved to Camden in 2010.

Several breeds of fox hounds, including English, American, Crossbreds and Penn-Marydells, will be judge at this bench show which is sanctioned by the Masters of Foxhounds of America.

The classes’ judge hounds on conformation, according to breed standards, with the champions of each breed competing against each other for best in show. The final class, a Pack Class, will judge how the hounds respond to commands by their huntsman.

Highlights during the show are special classes for children showing hounds. Grouped by age, the juniors are judges by their skill in handling the hounds they are showing. There will also be a Junior Pack Class.

The show begins at 8 a.m. in the grandstand area of the race course. Saturday’s show is free and open to the public.
