Bulldogs finish 10th, Demons 15th in state golf championships

WILL HICKS HELPED LEAD Camden to a 10th place finish in the AAA state golf championships held in Myrtle Beach on Monday and Tuesday.

Camden posted a 10th-place finish in the state class AAA golf tournament while Lugoff-Elgin came home 15th from the 4A championships played this weeks.

Camden, the Region 6-AAA champion, finished with a two-day 636 total for the 36-hole event played over the Black Bear Golf Course in Myrtle Beach.

The Bulldogs opened play with an opening round 319, putting them 10th in the 16-team field. Matt McCarley’s charges trimmed two strokes off their Monday round with a 317 on Tuesday, but were unable to make up any ground.

Senior Will Truesdale led the Dogs with a 76—81—157. Austin Watson, a junior, fired an 81-78—159 while sophomore Cort Calk shot an 82-78—160. Senior Ryan Reynolds went 81-80—161 while Will Hicks, an eighth-grader, posted a pair of 81s for a 162 total.

L-E, which finished fourth in Region 4 before coming in third in the 4A Upper State tournament, stood in 15th place with a 659 after Monday’s first 36 holes played at the Furman University Golf Club. Playing in windy conditions Tuesday, Mike Robinson’s charges closed with a 338 for a 997, 54-hole score.

Fort Dorchester unseated defending 4A champion Blythewood, 899-907, to win the title.

Freshman Kelli Murphy led the way for the Demons with a 79-82-83--244. Senior Cory Spaulding was three shots behind with an 82-81-84--247 with classmate Bobby Few shooting an 82-80-90--252. Freshman Lee Lambert went 83-91-82--256. Senior Creighton Seegars shot a 177 for 36 holes on Monday while freshman Nash Davis shot a 90 on Tuesday.
