Gloria 'Pretzel' Lint Shirley

Gloria "Pretzel" Lint Shirley of 211 E. Hill Street, Warsaw, N.C., passed away May 17, 2011 after a long and courageous battle against Alzheimer's disease. 

Gloria was the youngest daughter of Clarence and Sara Lint of Vanderbilt, PA where she was born December 9, 1927.  She moved to Washington, D.C. in 1945 where she met Howard L. Shirley of Camden, S. C.  After a storybook courtship of two years they were married February 17, 1950.

Gloria had been recruited and hired by the FBI in 1945 where she served in the Office of the Director, later transferring to the US Army where she served for the Chief of Staff. Following her husband to the Far East, she continued her work for the Army and gave birth to their son, Jeffrey Stuart, in Yokohoma, Japan.  Following 11 years with Arlington County Public Schools she was recruited by Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics where she worked for 10 years. Included among her duties was teaching the Evelyn Wood course at the White House during the Carter administration. Gloria was a most active, loving life type person who enjoyed traveling and entertaining. Among her many hobbies were swimming, bowling, golfing, dancing, dancing and more dancing.

She is survived by her husband, Howard, son, Jeffrey and grandson, Benjamin of Richmond, VA, her sister, Ruth Collins of Seattle, WA and her niece and nephew, Tamara Buchanan and Doug Benoliel of Lopez Island, WA. Donations may be made to any local Alzheimer's Association or the National office. Cremation arrangements and serviced by Community Funeral Home of Warsaw.
