The Camden Bulldog Anglers finished in third place in Saturday’s The Bass Federation of South Carolina State High School Championships held on Lake Murray.

The first place finishers in the ages 11-14 and 15-18 age groups automatically qualified for the National Guard Junior World Championships to be held in Arkansas in July.

Camden is coached by Daniel Sisk, a teacher/coach at Camden High School.

The Bulldogs’ Carson Morgan, an eighth-grader at Camden Middle School, was second in the 11-14-year-old division with a total catch of 4.26 pounds. He also took first place in the big fish portion of the event as he reeled in a bass which weighed 2.66 pounds.

Morgan missed winning the individual championship by a little more than one pound. For his efforts, he received $125 gift certificate from Sportsmen’s Warehouse for the big fish.

Morgan said his day could best be summed up by the adage, "If at first you don’t succeed ... try, try again."

"At 11:45 (a.m.) I started hopping around from point to point," Morgan said of his day on the lake. "We didn’t stay on a point longer than a minute if we didn’t get a bite. We circled one point to get the herring running and then stopped the boat in 12 feet of water.

"I casted toward the shore and only got perch bites, but as I threw away from the shore, I caught fish. I caught three fish in 30 minutes with a green, pumpkin red worm shaky head.

"My driver said it best, ‘I went from a zero to a hero.’"

As a team, Camden’s total hauled weighed in at 14 pounds, six ounces. Dixie High School won the tournament with 22 pounds while St. Andrews finished second with a total catch of 16 pounds. Both age group winners were claimed by Dixie High School.

In addition to Morgan, other Bulldog anglers who competed in the state championship were Drew Charles, Mitch Forrest, Bradley Sheorn, Wesley Sheorn and Calvin Wadford.
