Head Start children ages 3 to 4 in Ruth Wilson and Derrick Porter’s class work on painting flower pots before planting vegetables in them as part of a Cinco de Mayo celebration. Parent Juana Torres helps her two children along with the rest of the class decorate the pots. Sudents in the Early Head Start class for ages 6 weeks to 2 years joined in the fun by helping plant tomatos. Debbie White (right), the head teacher for Early Head Start, lets students touch the tomato plant before it is planted.  Other teachers involved with Early Head Start are Brigitte Tucker in toddler class and Althea Benson, Anglea Reames and Jessica Hernandez in the infant class. Head Start is a free, comprehensive, child development and services program for pre-school children ages, three, four and five and their families. Head Start promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of health, educational, nutritional, social and other services. Parent and community development is the cornerstone of the program.
