Area students earn academic honors, degrees

A number of Kershaw County students were named to the President’s List and Dean’s List for the 2011 spring semester at Francis Marion University.

Of those students listed on the President’s List, 163 earned perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the semester, the highest possible ratio a student can receive.

Students named to the President’s List must have earned a 3.75 or higher GPA for the semester. Full-time students named to the President’s List must have taken at least 12 semester hours and part-time students named to that list must have completed at least 12 hours at FMU, have declared a major and completed at least six hours during the semester.

Dean’s List students earned a GPA for the semester between 3.25 and 3.749. Full-time students named to the Dean’s List must have taken at least 12 hours and part-time students named to that list must have completed at least 12 hours at FMU, have declared a major and completed at least six hours during the semester.

Full-time students on the President’s List included Caroline O. Jowers of Camden, Elementary Education; Matthew T. Kirkland of Lugoff, Computer Science; Jonathan C. Wiggins of Lugoff (4.0), Accounting; and Cassidy B. Wynn of Lugoff (4.0), Elementary Education.

Full-time students on Dean’s List included William R. McLaughlin of Bethune, Music Industry; Stelishia A. Truesdale of Cassatt, Political Science; Eric J. Wooten of Lugoff, Nursing-Second Degree; and Buddy A. Wyckoff of Lugoff, Biology/Pre-Nursing.

Cadet Edwin Davis Partin of Camden achieved Dean’s List status at The Citadel for the spring semester of the 2010-2011 academic year.

Partin is seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Partin.

Dean’s List recognition is given to those cadets and active duty military students registered for 12 or more semester hours whose grade point ratio is 3.2 or higher with no grade below a C for the previous semester’s work.

Two area students were among the 934 students who participated in Coastal Carolina University's commencement ceremonies May 7 at Brooks Stadium.

A total of 1,154 candidates from May and August were eligible to march in the ceremony, including 83

Joseph Bowers of Camden earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education

John St. Croix of Camden received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Brittany Akins of Elgin was awarded a Bachelor  of Science degree in Business Administration.

Wyatt Hammond of Elgin earned a Bachelor Arts degree.

Skidmore College celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2011 at the college's 100th commencement exercises held May 21 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

A total of 652 students in the Class of 2011 were recognized. Among those was Eliza Dunaway of Camden, who received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Dr. Don Dowless, vice president for academics at North Greenville University, delivered the commencement address before family and friends of 288 graduates May 5, marking the largest single graduating class in the school’s 119 year history. 

The following local students were members of the class:

Lugoff -- Kelli Elizabeth Allen, Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education, and Kristina Brittany Rabon, Bachelor of Arts, Early Childhood Education.

Elgin -- Wesley David Burr, Bachelor of Arts, Christian Studies; Daniel Lee Dederick, Bachelor of Science, Sport Management; and Jack Gary Stokes, Bachelor of Science, Accounting, cum laude.

Baccalaureate degree students whose cumulative grade point average is at least 3.5 graduated cum laude.
