The Elgin Police Department (EPD) delivered a load of fun at its first Elgin Podunk International Challenge (EPIC) May 14 to raise money for the EPD’s annual Toy Round Up and Caring Hands charity, which provides food and toys to families during the holiday season. The EPD also provides regular check-ups on the elderly in the Elgin community to ensure their safety and well-being. The festival kicked off with a welcome from Mayor Brad Hanley and the Pledge of Allegiance. Games, food and entertainment were offered for all ages. Highlights of the event included Otis Singleton and Heidi Thorton winning the title of “Mr. and Mrs. Podunk”; Larry Collins thanking everyone for their participation as Hanley looks on; a custom built outhouse provided by the Carolina Faith Riders; a coolest pet contest held for children in the community to show off their favorite pet with a paragraph and a picture; the Palmetto Dance team; EPD Police chief Harold Brown and Hanley congratulating Billy Peak as he was named the winner of the Ugly Car Contest; Eddie Roberts and his wife Gina presenting the EPD with a $500 donation for the Toy Round UP; and a group of tractor enthusiasts from the Sparkleberry Fair joining the fun by bringing their tractors out for a few friendly competitions.
