Meredith Toole, April Barrett, and Ashleigh Hough have been awarded the 2011 Laurie Slade Funderburk Leadership Scholarship. For a fourth year, the South Carolina General Assembly Women’s Caucus has given scholarships in honor of each of the sixteen women legislators currently serving in the South Carolina General Assembly. Representative Funderburk is currently serving as the Chair of the Women’s Caucus.

Meredith, the daughter of Celeste and Eric Toole, is a 2011 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School. Meredith will be attending Furman University in the fall and plans to have a career in medicine.

April Barrett, the daughter of Amy and Mitchell Barrett, is a 2011 graduate of North Central High School. April will be attending USC-Lancaster in the fall to major in nursing.

Ashleigh, the daughter of Dianne and Shelborn Bass, is a 2011 graduate of Camden High School. Ashleigh will be attending Clemson University in the fall to work towards her goal of being a biomedical engineer.

“I am pleased to present these scholarships to such outstanding individuals,” said Rep. Funderburk. “These students have demonstrated that they are dedicated, well-rounded, and that they have a genuine desire to help others and inspire them to do their best. I hope that this recognition will encourage Meredith, April, and Ashleigh to continue to find ways to make a difference.”

The purpose of the South Carolina General Assembly Women’s Caucus is to provide an educational and professional resource network to women elected or appointed to leadership positions; to develop their leadership skills; and to encourage, educate, and support potential female leaders. Currently, South Carolina ranks the lowest in the nation for the number of women elected to public office.
