The Thomas E. McLester Scholarship awards have been presented, for the second year, to two Kershaw County graduates with high aspirations for their future education and professional careers.

The recipients are Joseph C. Murphy and Keyayanna R. Alexander, both 2011 Camden High School graduates. The scholarship, given Camden First United Methodist Church, is named in honor of longtime educator, coach and mentor Thomas E. McLester.

Joseph was described by one of his teachers as an “extraordinary students; gentle, patient, kind and willing to serve as a mentor for others students.” He regularly attends church and is involved in many capacities.

Joseph has been accepted to Clemson University and plans to pursue a career in environmental engineering.

He is the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Charles Murphy.

Keyayanna, according to her teachers, is a hard-working student who demonstrates “a desire to excel in all of her endeavors. She is a very conscientious and gifted student.” She served as band captain for the Marching Bulldog Regiment. An avid reader, she received the Adult Book Club Award for reading the most books in her class.

A loyal church member, Keyayanna actively participates in many church and community ministries.

Her goal is to pursue a career in medicine as a doctor. Keyayanna has been accepted at the College of Charleston, where she will major in biology.

She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Daisy B. Alexander.
