Great American Campout

We watched our Boy Scouts loading up their gear to go to camp. They spend most of the time at camp out of doors. There will be good shade and water sports. And counselors will watch out for the boys so that don’t get too hot.

I wonder how I “survived my childhood” with all the time I spent outdoors. There was no such thing as air conditioning then -- at least not at our house. We gave no thought to playing inside during the day. It was the rainy days inside that made us crazy. All the fun stuff was outside!

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has started an event they call “The Great American Backyard Campout.” June 25 is the day set for the event this year. The purpose is to combat what they call “the indoor childhood.”

Why camp? There are lots of fun things to do on a campout. And you don’t have to “go somewhere else” to do it. NWF is concerned about America's indoor childhood and its health risks. They offer programs to make outdoor time a priority. They want to protect children's health and ensure their readiness to learn. It’s great to be outside, but plan at a time and a day when the heat won’t get to you.

Word List: counselors, Federation, concerned, readiness.
