The third annual KershawHealth Springdale 5K at Sunset will be held Aug. 20 at Springdale Race Course. The 5K Walk/Run is coordinated by the United Way of Kershaw County and benefits the United Way’s Health Care Council and its mission of improving the health of everyone in our community.

“We are proud to sponsor this event because it encourages so many people to become more active…whether by walking or running. Regular exercise is a vital part of maintaining your health and wellness,” said Donnie Weeks, KershawHealth president and chief executive officer, “and that is something we certainly like to promote. And, of course, we’re very supportive of the United Way Health Care Council’s efforts to improve the health of local citizens.”

Held on Springdale Race Course, the race presents an ideal grass and packed surface for dedicated runners and scenic vistas for walkers and casual runners, said organizers. But it also offers spectators a novel sight -- two-legged runners competing over a course usually travelled by thundering thoroughbred steeplechasers. Last year, more than 200 runners and walkers took part in the race, organizers said, and were impressed by the beauty and challenge of the course.

“This is a demanding course -- especially for experienced runners, who are always trying to improve -- and they appreciate that challenge. It’s so very different from the usual road runs they see, and it brings a new level to your training,” said Edwin Kohn, race coordinator and past chairman of the United Way’s Board of Directors. “But it’s also a course that casual runners can navigate, and it makes for a beautiful walk, as well. I believe it’s one of the most unique races in South Carolina.”

Participants are invited to include the whole family or to bring their dogs along for the walk. Last year, more than 400 people attended the event, with more than half actually running or walking the course. KershawHealth will provide free body composition analysis for participants prior to the race and Target will offer post-race snacks. Spectators will be seated in the grandstand, where the entire course is visible. Live music will entertain spectators and runners throughout the event, and tailgating is encouraged. Convenient parking is available next to the grandstand.

“This is a very family-oriented event, and we encourage everyone to enjoy themselves before and after the race and to make an evening of it,” said United Way President Donny Supplee. “Last year, we had lots of children cheering on their parents or walking with them, and that’s great to see. It’s just the sort of activity the United Way and our Health Care Council wants to promote.”

The KershawHealth Springdale 5K at Sunset begins at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 20. Packet pickup and late registration will be available at 5:45 p.m. on race day. Registration is $25 in advance or $30 after Aug. 1 and includes an exclusive race T-shirt. Group rates are available, and there is no charge for spectators.
