NCAA should be control factor

I write in response to an article “Spurrier: Pay the ‘performers’ -- give players $300 a game” which appeared in the A section of The State newspaper June 2, in which Steve Spurrier, head football coach at USC in Columbia, “proposed a resolution at the SEC’s spring meetings that would pay college football players in the conference $300 per game, with the money coming out of the head coaches’ pockets.”

Overall, I think it is a good idea but the $300 should be mailed to each player from the NCAA headquarters and not be given to each player by their coach.

If any such proposed resolution is approved, it should be handled this way. A percentage of each college or university ticket sales should be sent to the NCAA and the NCAA should mail each football player a check. A control factor is very important because of so many “risk” factors.

The idea is very good and somewhat overdue. Many athletes come to our colleges and universities on athletic scholarships but do not have “pocket money” to do primary shopping for personal needs items or any social events, especially athletes who are from many “rural” areas.

Let us not forget that those outstanding recruits bring in lots of money to our colleges and universities, regardless of them being the recipients of athletic scholarships. That is a reality of life!
