Checking out the library

The library is one of my favorite places. The workers there are friendly and helpful. I grew up in a very small town. The library was one, small room. That room had books and a desk -- that’s all. The librarian checked out books, with a rubber stamp. The library wasn’t much to look at. But there I explored new worlds in books.

Taking my children to the library here was a joy. At the library they were allowed to have anything they wanted. They picked out lots of books at every visit. Our library has changed since those days. The building is bigger. There are many more books plus magazines and videos. Besides books there are computers. I wonder if computers will ever replace books.

Last week, I watched a little boy picking out books at the library. He was happy to find a favorite book. He had a stack of books, but he was looking for more. His mother thought he was getting too many books. She suggested a video. “No,” said the child. “I want another book.” Here’s a kid after my own heart!

Word List: librarian, explored, allowed thought.
