July

Independence Day (July 4th) is a great holiday! We don’t give gifts. And most people don’t send “Happy Fourth of July” cards. Families have traditions how to celebrate. For me, it’s parades, fireworks and food! Most of the foods we think of for this holiday are quite simple. Hot dogs, hamburgers and barbecue are at the top of my list. It’s a case of “put it on the grill and sit in the shade.”  (One may guess that this is my day out of the kitchen.)

Some favorite summertime fruits and vegetables are ripe in July. Local tomatoes are ripe. So are watermelons, peaches and corn. We used to pick our first sweet corn about this time of year. One of the memories of my childhood was at my grandmother’s house. Big, juicy tomato sandwiches and corn-on-the cob. I helped to turn the crank of a huge ice cream churn. (He who turns the crank gets to lick the paddles.)

Don’t give up the celebration, just because the Fourth is over. There is still time to remember how our nation got here. July is a whole month long.

Word List: Independence, holiday, traditions, celebrate.
