The American Legion Auxiliary Post 17 participated in selecting and sponsoring five delegates from Kershaw County to attend Palmetto Girls State June 12-18. The tuition of each student was shared by the unit and American Legion Post 17 members.

Students selected included Megan Leitner, representing Lugoff-Elgin High School; Sally Dunaway, representing Camden High School (CHS); Emily Deal representing CHS; Bradley Taylor Vincent representing North Central High School (NCHS); and Samantha Lynn Woods, representing NCHS.

Palmetto Girls State is a strenuous week for students involved. Good health, emotional stamina and maturity are important, said Rhunette Haywood, president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 17. Selection to attend Palmetto Girls State is an honor and a once in a lifetime experience.

One goal for the program is for delegates to return to their respective communities and high schools with an interest in government and a sense of the responsibilities of good citizens.
The Auxiliary invites the delegates (students) to come to their meeting July 11 at 6:30 p.m. to share their experiences with the group.

The Auxiliary is a group of women of all ages and from all walks of life who join together in the fellowship of giving. It is a volunteer organization dedicated to honoring the veterans who made it possible for Americans to have the freedom they enjoy today. For more information about the Auxiliary or to join, contact Haywood at 803-260-7778.
