A single-car crash left a young Elgin man dead late Monday night.

Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers said Rashad Ramon Bailey, 23, of Chesnut Road, Elgin, died at the scene around 10:55 p.m. Monday. Fellers said the crash occurred on Sessions Road near Bailey’s home.

“He was driving away from Elgin and was close to home,” Fellers said. “It appears he went off the right hand side of the road, struck a tree and died at the scene due to blunt force trauma to the chest.”

Fellers noted Bailey was not wearing a seat belt.

“I think if he’d had it on, he would be alive today,” Fellers said.

S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Billy Elder said Bailey was driving a 1999 Ford Taurus at the time of the crash, which is still under investigation.
