The Lugoff-Elgin girls tennis team carried the momentum from their 4-2 victory over McBee last Tuesday to nearly upsetting Spring Valley before coming out on the short end of a 4-3 decision.

Aaliyah Herbert got the first point for the Lady Demons by being very aggressive and playing extremely well in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over SV’s Hayley Loughlin at fourth singles. “(Aaliyah) looked very relaxed and controlled. It was really exciting to watch her great play,” said L-E head coach Zoe Dommel.

In third singles, the Lady Demons’ Meredith Toole avenged an earlier loss to Brook Summers. After winning the first set 6-4, Toole trailed, 1-6, in the second set tie-breaker before rallying for a 9-7 victory. Earlier this season, Summers won over Toole in a match which included three tie-breakers.

The third L-E victory was supplied by the second doubles team of Ashley Martin and Beth Jordan, who defeated Becca Moore and Jenny Roth, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

SV won at first singles as Meggie Vandiver outlasted  Lydia Royals, 2-6, 6-3 (10-3). In second singles, Maia Blackmon downed Alexie Herbert, 6-1, 6-2. In fifth singles, the Lady Vikings Ahzia Wood upended Kelsey Worthington, 6-4, 7-5. SV won at first singles, as well, with Vandiver and Blackmon holding off Royals and Herbert , 6-1,3-6, (10-3).

Dommel said she could not have been more proud of her team for the effort they put into this match.

“I knew that this was going to be a good match,” she said. “The first time we met, we were evenly matched with several sets going to tie-breaks, but we just didn’t come away with any points.  This time, we were in every match. These ladies can really take away just how far they have come and have improved this year.”
