Farmers interested in receiving 75 percent cost share from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to install conservation practices on their farms within the next year must sign up prior to Aug. 1, according to NRCS District Conservationist Mike Newman.

Last year the NRCS provided more than $621,000 to assist landowners in Kershaw County in installing conservation practices such as cross fencing, stacking sheds, livestock watering facilities, permanent grass planting for grazing, tree planting (Long Leaf Pine), diversions for erosion control and other measures. These conservation practices were installed to help protect water quality and the environment.

In past years the cutoff date was Oct. 1; however, this date has changed to Aug. 1. “It is very important that your application is filed and in our system by the new cutoff date,” said Newman. “We accept applications all year, but each year there is a cutoff date and the applications received prior to the cutoff date are the ones considered for funding the next year.”

For more information including eligibility requirements, call o r visit the NRCS office, 1126 Little St., Camden, or call Newman at 432-2576, ext. 107.
