Camden’s King Haiglar post office may be on the chopping block. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is looking to cut back on costs. The King Haiglar branch, located in Dusty Bend and which opened in April 2000, is listed as one of 3,700 post offices nationwide under review for closure.

South Carolina USPS Communications Coordinator Harry Spratlin said the current list is “only a study” and that “a lot of the ones listed are not going to be closed.” USPS spokesperson Michael Miles said the list is only a “big-picture” idea.

“We look at several factors when considering closing a branch,” Miles said. “We look at the impact on the community and if we will still be able to provide our mandated universal service to our customers. We close a branch only in a matter that we could still serve the community.”

Miles said that sometimes branches within a community perform different functions and that it may not be practical to close a particular office. Most of the branches that could potentially be closed are ones considered to be of “low activity,” meaning those with low foot traffic and low revenues. The King Haiglar branch is open only from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The postal service has closed approximately 200 branches across the country this year due to loss of revenue. Miles said modern postal customers are seeking alternative channels such as buying stamps online or visiting automated postal service machines, especially in big cities, which now accounts for about 35 percent of USPS revenue.

“This is a reflection of the economy and increased technology,” Miles said. “People are not mailing as much anymore. This has combined to produce a tremendous drop for the postal service.”
